Record Number of Refugees Arrive in the Canary Islands in 2024
In 2024, over 46,000 refugees reached the Canary Islands, marking the highest number ever recorded. This figure surpasses the previous year’s record by approximately 7,000 individuals. Stricter Mediterranean controls have shifted migration routes, leading to an increase in dangerous Atlantic crossings from West Africa. Despite a decrease in irregular entries to the EU overall, Atlantic crossings rose by 19%. Reports indicate that at least 9,757 migrants died during their attempts to reach the islands, highlighting the perilous nature of this journey.
