Release of Over 300 Prisoners in Venezuela Amid Turmoil Following Nicolás Maduro’s Election
In Venezuela, more than 300 prisoners arrested during violent protests after President Nicolás Maduro’s re-election this summer have been freed. Following the announcement of his victory, which sparked significant opposition claims of fraud, more than 2,400 were detained amid protests resulting in 28 deaths. A government statement confirmed 103 releases in the last 72 hours, with non-governmental organization Foro Penal reporting that 190 had already been freed. Maduro’s third term inauguration is scheduled for January 10, 2025, while opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia plans to return to Venezuela on the same day.
