This sale marks the highest amount ever paid for a work by Magritte, known for his surrealist style. The piece, L’empire des lumières, painted in 1954, depicts a street scene illuminated by a streetlight, creating a unique juxtaposition of night and day. The buyer remains anonymous, and the artwork was part of the late interior designer Mica Ertegun’s collection.
