Revealing the Moon’s Secrets: Volcanic Activity Discovered on the Far Side

Recent research, including samples from China’s Chang’e-6 mission, indicates that the far side of the Moon experienced volcanic eruptions over 4 billion years ago. This groundbreaking study, published in Nature and Science, discovered basalt rock fragments and revealed a surprisingly young eruption roughly 2.83 billion years ago, not found on the near side. The findings are significant for lunar and planetary science, marking the first geochronology analysis from the far side. The Moon’s far side, often misrepresented as the ‘dark side’, receives ample sunlight, despite being out of view from Earth.
