Chios Island, once home to numerous tanneries, faces a revival as the University of the Aegean plans to restore and develop the historic Tannery District. Local resident Takis Diraakis announced that the area, gifted by the municipality and shipping families, spans about 30 acres and includes plans for the restoration of existing buildings and construction of new ones. This initiative follows a decline in the tanning industry since the 1980s, which led to the closure of many tanneries.
