Rise in Shoplifting in Switzerland Highlights Changing Theft Patterns

Shoplifting incidents in Switzerland have surged in recent years, with 2023 statistics showing a 15% increase to over 24,000 cases. Both opportunistic and organized thefts are on the rise, particularly among groups that resell stolen goods. A significant portion of shoplifters are identified as Romanian, Maghreb asylum seekers, and Swiss nationals. Experts believe that modern retail designs may lessen the deterrent against theft. Despite the rise in cases, police successfully resolve about 90% of shoplifting investigations.
