Rising Death Toll from Contaminated Alcohol Consumption in Istanbul

In Istanbul, 37 people have died over six weeks due to contaminated alcohol consumption, with 77 others affected since November 1, 2024. Authorities have detained 14 suspected sellers of the toxic alcohol. This alarming trend follows a surge in illegal production spurred by high alcohol taxes, echoing similar incidents in recent years. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been criticized for his stance against alcohol consumption, as the national spirit raki remains prohibitively expensive for many citizens.
