Rising Dismissals Among Healthcare Workers for Medication Theft in the Netherlands

Between 2021 and 2023, 95 healthcare workers in the Netherlands were dismissed for taking medications from hospital stock, with the highest incidents in hospitals. Benzodiazepines and narcotics like tramadol and morphine were commonly taken. Inspectors believe these figures may underreport the issue, as staff often feel compelled to take medication due to high stress levels and a lack of supervision. The Dutch Health Care Inspectorate calls for improved oversight and a culture shift towards discussing mental health rather than defaulting to dismissal.
