Rising Trend of Religious Building Deconsecration in France

Recent findings from France’s États généraux du patrimoine religieux show a significant increase in the deconsecration of religious buildings, with 274 deconsecrated churches recorded between 2015 and 2023. This figure starkly contrasts with the 137 deconsecrated buildings noted from 1905 to 2015. Additionally, the number of decommissioned communal buildings has risen to 226 in 2023. Currently, 1,679 religious buildings remain closed for various reasons, highlighting the changing landscape of worship in France, where 42,213 places of worship are still counted.
