Russia Unveils Remarkably Preserved 50,000-Year-Old Mammoth Remains
On December 23, Russia showcased the well-preserved remains of a female mammoth, named ‘Iana’, discovered in Yakutia. Weighing 180 kg and measuring 120 cm in height, Iana is considered among the best-preserved mammoth specimens globally. Anatoli Nikolaïev, rector of the Northeast Federal University in Yakutsk, highlighted the exceptional preservation and the potential insights this find could provide into the biology and ecology of mammoths. Iana’s remains were found during summer research efforts, adding to the historical significance of the area, which has yielded other prehistoric animal remains.
