Researchers have identified that brown microalgae, specifically diatoms, possess ‘molecular eyes’ that help them navigate the ocean floor. This discovery, published in the journal Nature, reveals that these microscopic organisms can decode variations in light, enabling them to determine their vertical position in water. The study highlights that only diatoms residing in high-latitude regions, where light variations are significant, have these phytochromes, which also assist in their photosynthetic abilities.
