Severe Earthquake in Tibet Leaves 53 Dead and Many Injured
A powerful earthquake struck Tibet, resulting in at least 53 fatalities according to Chinese state media. The quake, measured at a magnitude of 6.8 by the Chinese Earthquake Center and 7.1 by the US Geological Survey, occurred near Tingri, located about 400 kilometers from Lhasa. Images showed extensive destruction of buildings. The tremors were also felt in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, prompting residents to evacuate. Authorities are assessing the quake’s impact while the region faces severe cold temperatures, reaching as low as minus 18 degrees Celsius overnight.
