The quake, measured at a magnitude of 6.8 by the Chinese Earthquake Center and 7.1 by the US Geological Survey, occurred near Tingri, located about 400 kilometers from Lhasa. Images showed extensive destruction of buildings. The tremors were also felt in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, prompting residents to evacuate.
