Severe Sentences for Democracy Activists in Historic Hong Kong Trial

In Hong Kong’s largest trial concerning pro-democracy activists, 45 defendants received sentences of up to ten years under the National Security Law. Former student leader Joshua Wong was sentenced to four years and eight months, while organizer Benny Tai received the harshest penalty of ten years. The case stemmed from their alleged illegal primaries for the legislative council election in 2020. The verdicts, delivered amid heavy police presence and public protests, have drawn international attention and condemnation.
