Sharp Increase in Homelessness in Germany Officially Recorded in 2023
According to a government report released on Wednesday, the number of officially registered homeless individuals in Germany surged to approximately 532,000 in 2023, up from around 263,000 in 2022. This increase is partially attributed to the inclusion of about 137,000 Ukrainian refugees residing in temporary accommodations. However, Berlin has downplayed the figures, suggesting they may be inflated due to the closure of various reception centers amid pandemic restrictions. Most registered homeless individuals live in government facilities or with relatives, while a minority live on the streets, predominantly German citizens.
