Significant Discovery of Byzantine Artwork Featuring Last Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos
A recent restoration project at the Catholic of the Old Monastery of Taxiarchis in Aigialeia has uncovered two layers of high-quality frescoes from the late Byzantine period. Among these, archaeologist Dr. Anastasia Koumousi discovered a unique portrait of Constantine XI Palaiologos, the last Byzantine emperor, in a fresco dating to the mid-15th century. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni emphasized the historical significance of this finding, connecting it to the emperor’s unique portrait and the artistic skills of the period.
