Significant Rise in Migrant Crossings in the English Channel as Authorities Warn of Risks

On December 12, 120 migrants were rescued by French authorities during attempts to cross the English Channel, with incidents involving four different vessels. The maritime prefect warned of the dangers associated with this heavily trafficked area, where weather conditions can be severe. Since January, nearly 34,000 migrants have successfully crossed, while at least 73 have died attempting the journey this year, marking 2024 as the deadliest year for small boat crossings since 2018.
