Socialists Decline to Join New French Government Led by François Bayrou

Boris Vallaud, leader of the Socialist parliamentary group, announced today that the center-left Socialists will not participate in the new government under Prime Minister François Bayrou. Emmanuel Macron’s selection of Bayrou is seen as a continuation of his policies, which Vallaud described as ‘dangerous.’ The Socialists were considered potential game-changers following the ousting of former Prime Minister Michel Barnier, which ignited France’s second major political crisis in six months. The far-right National Rally and the radical left party La France Insoumise have also voiced opposition to Bayrou’s appointment.
