Bridget Smith, leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council, denounced the former Conservative government’s Best Value Notice regarding a four-day week trial as a politically motivated ‘culture war’ tactic. The Labour government did not reissue the notice, which initially demanded the council demonstrate taxpayer value while implementing the trial. Despite opposition concerns about staff potentially taking second jobs and a sense of ‘palpable anger’ from residents, the council insisted no staff have taken additional jobs during the trial, which began in early 2023 to improve staff recruitment and productivity.
