South Korean Parliament Votes to Impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol
The South Korean National Assembly voted today in favor of impeaching President Yoon Suk-yeol following a controversial attempt to impose martial law on December 3, which he retracted six hours later. Out of 300 lawmakers, 204 supported the impeachment, while 85 opposed it. Yoon’s duties are suspended until the Constitutional Court decides on the validity of the impeachment, which may take up to 180 days. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will temporarily assume presidential responsibilities. Yoon, previously a prosecutor turned political figure, faces a historic low approval rating of 11%.
