Southern Resident Orca Tahlequah Experiences Loss of Another Calf
Tahlequah, an endangered Southern Resident orca, has been observed carrying the body of her deceased calf off the coast of Seattle, seven years after a similar incident. The Center for Whale Research reported that Tahlequah, also known as J35, previously mourned another lost calf for 17 days in 2018. With only about 70 Southern Resident orcas remaining, the loss is particularly devastating, as Tahlequah has now lost two of her four documented calves. The population continues to decline due to various environmental pressures.
