Spain’s Congress Approves Historic Labor Rights for Domestic Workers

Spain’s Congress has made a significant move to protect domestic workers by ratifying ILO Convention 189. With overwhelming support, the legislation guarantees equitable working conditions and mandates monthly salaries, as well as access to unemployment benefits—addressing a long-standing discrimination against these workers. The new regulations will also ensure proper rest periods and rights related to repatriation for migrant domestic staff. Minister of Labor Yolanda Díaz announced that necessary legislative adjustments are underway to implement these vital protections.
