Spain’s Immigration Reform Aims to Facilitate Work Permits for Undocumented Migrants
Spain plans to reform its immigration laws starting May 2025, allowing approximately 300,000 undocumented migrants to obtain work and residence permits annually until 2027. Elma Saiz, Spain’s Minister for Social Security and Immigration, emphasized the need for Spain to remain an open and prosperous nation. The reform includes easier visa applications and improvements in workers’ rights, while also receiving criticism for potentially discouraging asylum applications from vulnerable individuals. The plan is seen as essential for sustaining economic growth amidst an aging population.
