Sri Lankan Tamils Resettled in the UK from Diego Garcia After Prolonged Struggle
Around 60 Sri Lankan Tamils who had been stranded on the remote military island of Diego Garcia for over three years have been brought to the UK. Permitted to stay for six months with financial support, their arrival marks the conclusion of complex legal battles regarding their asylum claims. While the UK government termed this a ‘one-off’ humanitarian action, their long-term future remains uncertain amidst ongoing discussions about the territory’s fate following the UK’s decision to cede control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
