Study Reveals Rising Authoritarianism and Anti-foreign Sentiments in Germany

A new report from the Leipzig Authoritarianism Study indicates a troubling rise in xenophobic attitudes in Western Germany, with acceptance of anti-foreign statements increasing from 12.6% in 2022 to 19.3% in 2024. Meanwhile, support for democracy has declined, with only 42.3% favoring Germany’s democratic model—a significant drop from 58.8%. The report highlights that 31.1% of respondents in the West feel Germany is overly influenced by foreigners, while antisemitic sentiments have risen slightly in the West but decreased overall. The study reflects shifting societal attitudes towards authoritarianism and xenophobia across the nation.
