Surge in Unsolved Shoplifting Cases in England and Wales Amid Holiday Crime Wave
A recent analysis revealed that approximately 670 shoplifting cases remain unsolved daily in England and Wales, marking a 38% increase in unsolved cases over the past five years. This holiday season has seen staff confronting rising criminal activity, with only 17.2% of cases leading to charges. The Metropolitan Police have the lowest clearance rate at just 5.3%. Lisa Smart, the Liberal Democrats’ shadow Home Secretary, criticized the former Conservative government’s negligence, which has, according to her, made many crimes effectively lawful.
