Surgeon Accidentally Transplants Cancer Cells from Patient to Himself

A 53-year-old surgeon in Germany developed a tumor in his hand five months after removing a malignant growth from a patient. Genetic analysis confirmed that the tumor was a fibrous histiocytoma, identical to the patient’s original tumor, suggesting accidental cell transplantation. While rare, similar cases of cancer transmission through organ transplantation have been reported. After surgical removal, the surgeon is reported to be healthy with no signs of tumor recurrence two years later.
