Swiss Court Reduces Penalties for Climate Activists in UBS Case
The Swiss Federal Court has significantly reduced the penalties for seven climate activists involved in a protest at a UBS branch in Lausanne where they scattered coal to protest the bank’s investments in fossil fuels. The court ruled that since UBS did not pursue charges, the state cannot step in to prosecute on its behalf, limiting the activists’ charges to participating in an unauthorized demonstration. Legal experts view this as a positive signal for future climate activism.
