In Switzerland, the Word of the Year has been identified since 2003, initially by the ‘Büro Wort des Jahres’ and now by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) since 2017. A team of linguists compiles a shortlist based on a vast digital text corpus, public suggestions, and jury input. The jury selects three winning words reflecting significant topics and issues within the German-speaking part of Switzerland from the past year. An open call for public proposals for the 2024 Word of the Year is currently underway.
