Swiss Parliament Agrees to Abolish Hypothetical Rental Value Taxation on Homeowners

After more than seven years of debate, the Swiss National and Council of States have reached an agreement to eliminate the Eigenmietwert tax on primary and secondary residences. Despite the consensus, implementation is pending, and opponents of the reform may pose significant challenges. The changes will introduce a property tax for second homes and limit deductions to prevent substantial losses for federal revenue. A final vote on the proposal is set for Friday, followed by a possible referendum to decide the fate of the Eigenmietwert tax.
