Swiss Supreme Court to Review Controversial Vote on Women’s Retirement Age

The Swiss Supreme Court will decide on December 12 whether to hold a new referendum regarding the increase of the women’s retirement age from 64 to 65, a measure approved by voters in September 2022. Opponents claim the decision was influenced by misleading financial data, resulting in a narrow 50.6% approval. They argue that inaccurate projections regarding social security expenditures misled the public. The Federal Social Insurance Office acknowledged the calculation error, prompting an investigation led by Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. The scandal has also led to the announced resignation of BSV Director Stéphane Rossini in 2025.
