Switzerland Proposes New Textile Recycling Fee Amid Growing Waste Crisis
As the textile waste crisis escalates, Switzerland’s textile industry plans to introduce a recycling fee ranging from 3 to 7 Rappen per T-shirt. Despite Swiss residents purchasing over 60 clothing items yearly, much of this ends up in landfills, including in Ghana where 40% of imported second-hand clothes are discarded. Industry experts emphasize the need for advanced chemical recycling technologies to improve textile recovery. Supported by major Swiss brands, the initiative aims to enhance the collection, sorting, and reuse of textiles, aligning with upcoming EU regulations mandating retailer contributions to recycling systems by 2026.
