Switzerland Targets Healthcare Cost Reductions Amid Rising Premiums

At a recent roundtable led by Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, Swiss health sector stakeholders agreed on a plan to save approximately 300 million francs annually starting in 2026. As healthcare premiums rise for the third consecutive year, projected to increase by 6% in 2025, the growing elderly population further pressures costs. While the federal government aims to regulate costs through collaborative agreements among healthcare partners, previous reform efforts have faltered. Upcoming parliamentary discussions in December will address contentious proposals, including mandatory rebates from pharmaceutical companies based on their market volumes.
