Syrian Man Charged in U.S. for Torture Involvement During Assad’s Regime

A 72-year-old Syrian man, Samir Ousman al-Sheikh, has been charged in the U.S. for his role in torturing prisoners at the notorious Adra prison in Damascus between 2005 and 2008. He was arrested in Los Angeles while attempting to travel to Beirut, having allegedly lied about his past involvement in Syrian human rights abuses during his visa application. Following the recent ousting of Bashar Assad’s regime, thousands of prisoners have been freed, and investigations have revealed numerous bodies in Syrian prisons.
