Syrian Rebels Capture Notorious Sednaya Prison Amid Reports of Past Executions
Rebels from Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, previously affiliated with al-Qaeda, have entered Syria’s capital city, Damascus, and taken control of the notorious Sednaya prison. Amnesty International reported that this prison was known for extreme torture and mass executions, with thousands reportedly killed between 2011 and 2015. As the rebels celebrate the release of prisoners, Sednaya remains a symbol of the Assad regime’s brutality, having housed countless political dissenters subjected to severe abuse.
