Thailand Plans Birth Control for Elephants Amid Population Surge

Thailand is set to regulate its increasing elephant population through a plan by the Ministry of Environment to administer contraceptive injections. Minister Chalermchai Sri-on stated that the vaccinations will not harm female elephants and can prevent pregnancies for several years. Currently, approximately 4,000 wild elephants inhabit the country, with projections suggesting an increase to at least 6,000 over the next four years. The initiative aims to reduce human-elephant conflicts and promote coexistence, as past encounters have resulted in fatalities.
