The Atlantic Wall: Germany’s Failed Defense Against Allied Invasion

Between 1940 and 1945, Germany constructed the Atlantic Wall, a lengthy defensive fortification stretching from the Finnish-Russian border to the Pyrenees, aimed at preventing Allied incursions. Concentrated at strategic coastal points, such as ports and river mouths, the wall featured numerous gun emplacements and bunkers, along with thousands of other installations like radar systems. Despite these efforts, the Atlantic Wall could not thwart the Allied invasion, culminating in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, which marked the start of West Europe’s liberation.
