On December 8, 2023, the legendary Krampus and other terrifying creatures paraded through the streets of Munich, exciting and frightening local residents and tourists alike. The tradition, which has roots in Alpine folklore, features Krampus as a counterpart to Saint Nicholas, punishing naughty children while rewarding the good ones. Accompanied by the ‘Perchten’, known for ringing bells to ward off winter’s evil spirits, the event has been celebrated in Munich since 2004, though its origins stretch back over 500 years.
