The Onion has abandoned its plan to acquire Infowars, owned by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, after a U.S. bankruptcy judge ruled the auction process was not transparent enough. The auction was intended to pay damages to victims’ families from the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting, for which Jones has been ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion. Only The Onion and a supplements company linked to Jones participated in the bidding, raising concerns over fairness. Despite the ruling, The Onion remains interested in a future purchase.
