The Role of Women in Ancient Macedonian History Explored in Recent Lecture

Archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridi delivered a lecture at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki, focusing on the significant contributions of women in ancient Macedonia. She highlighted the dual role of Macedonian queens as mothers and priestesses, citing Eurydice, mother of Philip II, as a key figure in securing the throne for her son, which indirectly led to the birth of Alexander the Great. Kottaridi also compared the freedoms of women in the Hellenistic world, influenced by Macedonian customs, to those in classical Athens, emphasizing their economic independence and rights.
