Thessaloniki Metro Opens with Archaeological Wonders

After nearly 20 years of delays, the metro line in Thessaloniki officially opened, allowing passengers to experience not only urban transit but also remarkable archaeological discoveries made during construction. Over 300,000 artifacts, including ancient graves and artifacts from the Roman and Byzantine eras, have been integrated into the metro stations. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed pride in the unique melding of modern transport and historical heritage. The metro aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Greece’s second-largest city, with an expected daily ridership of 250,000. A second metro line is planned for completion by 2040.
