Thousands Gather for Newgrange Winter Solstice Celebration in Ireland

This morning, crowds will assemble at Newgrange in County Meath to celebrate the Winter Solstice, which marks the year’s shortest day. While thousands applied to witness the event, only ten lottery winners will have access to the tomb for the sunrise illumination. The phenomenon occurs around December 21, when the sun enters Newgrange through a ‘roof box,’ lighting the central chamber. Live streaming of the event will also allow global viewers to participate in this ancient celebration.
