Tradition of Strohberta Bear Parade in Trebgast Brings Good Luck

In the town of Trebgast, Bavaria, a group of bachelors uphold an ancient tradition by parading the straw bear named ‘Strohberta’ on Christmas Eve. This festive custom is thought to ensure prosperity for the coming year as the participants, dressed in costumes, visit homes, gathering gifts and allowing residents to pluck a straw piece for good luck. The event, nearly forgotten during wartime, was revived in 1945 and has since become a much-anticipated celebration, despite the challenges faced due to the recent pandemic.
