Traditional Pontic New Year’s Customs in Greece

On New Year’s Eve in the Pontic region of Greece, families indulge in a rich table spread that traditionally includes fruits and nuts. Before prayer, the family head splits six walnuts, representing the months of the year in a unique fortune-telling ritual. Each empty shell is filled with water, and the next morning, the shells are inspected to predict the weather for each month. This custom reflects deep-rooted cultural beliefs and is explained by Giannis Karydis, vice president of the Pontic Association of Ptolemaida.
