Turkey Increases Border Crossings as Syrian Refugees Begin Return
Turkey is enhancing its border crossing capabilities with Syria to facilitate the return of Syrian refugees, according to Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. The daily crossing capacity has increased from 3,000 to between 15,000 and 20,000. Following the news of Bashar al-Assad’s ouster, many refugees have rushed south to return home. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced the reopening of the Yalanlı Crossing, closed since 2013. More than 738,000 Syrians have returned voluntarily since 2016, while approximately 2.9 million remain in Turkey.
