Turkey’s Erdogan Could Seek Constitutional Change for 2028 Elections

A key political ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan suggested that a constitutional amendment may be needed to allow Erdoğan to run for president again in the 2028 elections. Following his re-election last year, Erdoğan is currently serving his final term as president, barring early elections. Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), argued that if Turkey achieves stability and addresses pressing issues like terrorism and inflation, a further candidacy for Erdoğan would be a ‘natural choice.’ A potential amendment would require support from at least 360 parliamentary members to proceed.
