UK Approves New Electricity Interconnectors to Boost Ireland’s Renewable Energy Goals
UK energy regulator Ofgem has approved two significant electricity interconnectors between Britain and Ireland, aiming to enhance renewable energy integration. The LirIC interconnector will connect Scotland and Northern Ireland, adding 0.7 GW capacity, while Mares Connect will link Wales and the Republic of Ireland with 0.75 GW. Outgoing Energy Minister Eamon Ryan praised this as essential for decarbonization, noting that interconnectors can reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Despite challenges in meeting renewable targets by 2030, these developments are seen as a positive step toward a sustainable energy future for Ireland.
