UK Music Sales Reach 20-Year High in 2024 Driven by Major Artist Releases
In 2024, UK music sales soared to a record £2.4 billion, surpassing the previous high from 2001, propelled by popular albums from Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Coldplay. Streaming subscriptions accounted for nearly 85% of this spending, while vinyl sales experienced significant growth. Despite this resurgence, concerns remain regarding artist compensation in the streaming economy, with many musicians struggling financially. Kim Bayley of the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association labeled 2024 as a ‘banner year’ for music but noted that revenue still lags behind inflation-adjusted figures from earlier years.
