Ukraine Halts Russian Gas Transit in Historic Move
As of January 1, 2025, Ukraine has officially ceased the transit of Russian gas to Western Europe following the expiration of a key transit agreement. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galuschtschenko termed this decision a ‘historic event’ aimed at cutting off financial resources to Russia amid its ongoing conflict. Gazprom confirmed it no longer has the means to pump gas through Ukraine. The EU and neighboring countries assert preparedness for alternative gas supplies, despite potential challenges for some nations dependent on Russian gas.
