Ukraine’s Civilian Airports Damaged Amid Ongoing Conflict with Russia

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, fifteen of the country’s civilian airports have sustained damage, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. As Ukraine seeks to partially reopen its airspace, which has been closed since the outbreak of war, citizens must currently travel to neighboring countries by road or rail to fly. Shmyhal noted that the military situation and security remain critical factors in the decision to reopen airports, particularly the western airport in Lviv, which may see activity by 2025 if conditions permit.
