UN Reports Alarming Increase in Executions in Iran
The United Nations Human Rights Commissioner, Volker Türk, reported that at least 901 people were executed in Iran last year, surpassing the 853 executions in 2023. Türk expressed concern over the ongoing increase in executions, urging Iran to end this trend. The report, supported by reliable human rights organizations, indicated that most executions in 2024 were related to drug offenses, but also involved dissidents connected to protests from 2022-2023. Additionally, at least 31 women were executed, marking a record high since tracking began in 2008.
